What is Better Career? An Experience From Tanzania, Africa and the World.
You might ask yourself what better career is? There could be many definitions you can find outside there but they or they may not be true. It is not you alone, I have also been curious about it.
I remember during my first year at college, one of our lecturers told us, “I will be scared if you graduate here and become a bodaboda rider’’. Another lecturer (late) mentioned something similar when we were in our final year at college, “The studies you are pursuing won’t help you find a job, at least you could start learning riding a bodaboda so you don’t suffer after coming here”. These two sentences give a picture of how people view bodaboda riding jobs, it’s a blunt bad attitude.
As someone who has been obsessed with the unemployment issue, this made me curious, Is bodaboda riding a not worthy job? Unfortunately, not. It is viewed that way because the community used to think so.
Bodaboda riding is not a bad job even, I love riding and it’s my hobby. It’s among the decent jobs that most people can’t see. It should not be treated as a job for people who have lost hope or low educated people.
Let’s forget about bodaboda, think of other careers outside there, last month I was following up on the US election campaigns, I listened Trump addressing an issue of black people in the US, in one of his speeches, I tried to go to the comment sections, I read this comment that made me curious, “Black lives in America, they end up being, US army force, truck driver, delivery man, etc”. I still ask, what is the problem with these jobs? Are they worthless? Actually not. There is no worthless job unless it’s illegal or against morality. Even some illegal jobs have better career elements, Lol! Just kidding!
Every job is worth it especially when people are doing something of their interest and passion. That means, there is no bad job. All these intrigued me to think about jobs, life and how to live a purposeful life.
The quest of Better Career, I spent time thinking about what a Better Career is. That’s where I noticed that Better Career is:
A vocation that brings genuine fulfillment: A better career is one which gives you the actual fulfillment. A compelling pursuit that warrants dedication beyond standard hours, something you do not get tired doing over and over.
A direct correlation between effort and reward: A great career doesn’t give you fulfillment alone but helps you pay your bills, make savings and assures you improved welfare. What you get paid after should reflect the effort you put forth.
Flexibility that accommodates diverse personal circumstances: A better career is one that gives you an opportunity to live outside the work. If possible you can fit your career in your lifestyle. You are not a workaholic guru, have enough time to spend with your family, take care of your kids, and others.
