Internships as a promising hiring technique, it’s among the effective sources of great talents. Hiring interns is less risky, and cost-effective and assures higher chances of hiring right.

Internships are practical learning opportunities for high school, college/ university students and graduates to acquire first-hand experience. Most graduates find it hard to navigate the job market after graduation as they don’t have prior experience.

I remember after graduation, I navigated a similar challenge. I scrolled over job boards, here and there but couldn’t find any opportunity. Most opportunities require prior experience starting from one year and beyond. It was a tough moment as I wanted a job to get a financial breakthrough.

I remember one day when I was overwhelmed with rejections, unanswered applications and brokenness. The idea came to my mind to look for remote volunteering opportunities. I secured an opportunity to volunteer online for over five months and later secured a paid role within the company.

Time limitations. Our educational system gives us little time to look to acquire practical experience. Most internships range from one to two months and mostly on holidays. To fully understand the job market requirements, you need ample time to practice which most educational institutions have failed.

Geographical limitation. Most internships require interns to be physically present which limits talent from remote regions where companies are far remote for example Morogoro, Singida etc.

Lack of ownership. Interns working in a corporate environment in government and business institutions don’t work on real responsibilities and lack ownership of what they do. Interns need trust to delegate simple tasks helping their managers focus on high-level responsibilities.

Lack of proper performance management. Most internships are arranged on holidays, public offices tend to be overstaffed with interns and creating performance plans and managing interns’ performance is challenging. Interns do casual stuff like preparing tea, and coffee or being sent to bring bites.

How Tanzania Students Can Benefit the Most Out of Internships:

Prioritize Remote Internships:

Instead of waiting for one to two months of internship, you can be ahead of time to utilize your extra hours to find opportunities for you to learn and grow. A good thing is we have technology and it’s your responsibility to take advantage of it.

Use their school extra time:

Spend your extra hours when you don’t have many things on your plate to build your skill set. You can take online courses, volunteer, take internships or do part-time jobs that help you learn and grow.

Interning in startups instead of big corporates:

Corporate environments tend to be of hierarchical structure and no freedom in the execution of responsibilities as a result the chances of learning are so limited. Volunteering or doing internships in startups where the environment is more flexible with optimal delegation and risky environment, there are attributes a growing tech-savvy mindset can acquire.

Internships are opportunities for young mindsets to improve their skills and sharpen their abilities to solve real work situations.
